can't hear midi project through computer (but can hear it through keyboard)

I own a Ensoniq Halo keyboard; Cakewalk's Sonar 2.0 (Serial Number: CWSR220023301); the Edirol UM-2 USB Midi-interface; and the Realtek AC 97 Audio soundcard. I am using Windows 2000.
W/in the Sonar software, when I have selected the UM-2 midi interface as my input and the MPU-401 as my output, I am not able to hear the project through the computer.
When I have the UM-2 midi interface as my input AND output, I am able to hear the project through my keyboard.
But again, I have had no success in hearing my project through the computer, which is the ultimate goal (so that I can create and hear a project that consists of both midi and digital tracks), when the MPU-401 is selected as the output for the midi tracks.
I know that the soundcard is properly installed b/c I can play wave files and MP3 files through my computer outside of Sonar.
Any specific help is greatly appreciated.
