Newbie question : midi keyboards and computers

I've got an old keyboard with Midi-in and Midi-Out sockets. I've also got a computer with SB-compatible soundcard & running Windows 98. The preset sounds on my keyboard are WOEFUL (tinny pianos etc), so I was wondering if was possible to connect the 2 up (with a Midi-USB connector I guess) and then is there any software that will allow me to play other (better) sets of sounds (pianos, strings, etc) on the keyboard? Anyone!?
