toshiba satellite with midi -- anyone have it working?

Ok I have this problem. I've found other people asking the same question but I have yet to hear an answer. Basically it seems like my Toshiba Satellite notebook came with a crappy sound card -- yamaha ac-xg WDM. Type it into google with "cakewalk" and you'll see other messages about how they're mysteriously incompatible. I have to use MME every time which creates a lot of latency. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?
If not, does anyone just have a toshiba satellite notebook and have a good MIDI setup? All I want is to have some internal sounds, program some drums, bass, keys, etc. I want a program to sequence some sounds, all on my laptop. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Any help is much appreciated!
