dumb newbie question

I have been doing all of my music in sequencing programs, and by recording at studios, but I was considering buying a keyboard with midi capabilities to use with my pc. my question is, when I connect the keyboard through my midi interface and record through some of my programs, will it sound the same as it does coming through the key board, or is it completely dependent on the midi quality on my soundcard?
