I had similar problem. After doing my research I found out that USB adapters are totally bollocks, most are not working and my is not even fitted in the PC card slot.
Go to USB company web page and do a little of research in there to see if the card you have is compatible with your computer. I can't remember exactly, but there is a section in there tells you how to check that. I think in system files, click card and if there is a card bus line then it's ok, otherwise not. But you should check their web site.
