HELP cant get MIDI in

Im trying to connect a Roland RD-700 to a PC running XP and Sonar XL2. Im connected to the game port in a standard windows sound card and connected the in to the out and vice versa. i can get midi out and can control sounds on the keyboard from the PC but i cant get any Midi in. what am i doin wrong?
