Help w\Cakewalk & external synths

here's the scenario: I have a motu express XT USB midi interface w\latest drivers installed and Cakewalk 9 recognizes it and all of its ports.The thing works great with my editor\librarian application. I have installed instrument definitions for most of the synths connected. When I arm a track to record midi, it looks ok, but won't record. What am I doing or not doing. I would really appreciate some tutiledge as I have had so much trouble with sequencing programs I always end up going back to my hardware sequencer. I know Midi pretty well, but am having trouble with the computer communications. I'm using a HP PC 933mHz with 256m RAM.
PLEASE!!! Somebody HELP!
