Host Cable v's established MIDI ???

I have a midi connection between a mitsubishi PC's serial port and a Yamaha keyboard 'HOST' port using a supplied cable
My PC has 24Mb I am running Windows 95 and CakeWalk Software.
All I have read suggests installing a sound card and buying a MIDI cable to connect the joystick port of my sound card to the IN OUT MIDI ports on my keyboard but my Yamaha documentation says I can use the HOST cable?
Any ideas??
