What do you use for MIDI input? A keyboard? How is it connected to the computer?

: I am new to computer music and Midi and would appreciate help with the following.
: Computer settings are as follows,
: Sound playback=Via Audio Wave- only.
: Sound recording=Via Audio Wave- only.
: Midi music playback=Microsoft GS Wavetable synth-only.
: Cakewalk midi devices-output box is showing=Midi Mapper-only.
: The problem I am having is that there is nothing displayed in the Input box!!!
: I don't know whether I have a s**t soundcard, but I am on a budget any any help would be gratefully recieved!
