midi realtime control of external sequencer

Hi. I'm trying to get an external sequencer (yamaha an200) to start/stop and sync with a master sequencer (cubase) on the pc. So far I can get the an200 to start at the beginning of a midi sequence and stop when I hit stop on cubase...and they play in sync.
But what I really want is to send midi commands to the An200 to start, continue, or stop at any desired location within a cubase midi arrangement. Anyone know how?
I think I need cubase to send "realtime" messages in hexadecimal to the an200. I have no idea how this is done.
The an200 docs say, for example, to send FA hexadecimal to start. Should that be a sysex command? How do I prevent the an200 from starting everytime I hit "start" on cubase?
