:
: I can't get midi working on my computer.
: This is the equipment I am using:

: Roland RS-9 synthesizer
: Windows XP
: Soundblaster Live!
: Pentium 3 667Mhz 256mb ram

: I have the midi cable plugged into the joystick port of the soundblaster, and the IN goes to the MIDI OUT of the synth and OUT to MIDI IN.

: The synth is able to receive midi; i.e. I can play midi files on the computer and the synthesizer's soundbank is used, but can't get the computer to receive midi.

: I've tried using the Creative Keyboard and also Cubase VST 32 5.0 and set midi in to SBLive UART. This is also the only option for midi in.

: I've also tried the RS-9 on another computer, which is a Athlon XP 1800+ with 512mb ram and a Soundblaster Live as well, with the same problem. I'm pretty sure this problem is something to do with the computer setup (drivers need to be installed or something), but I don't know what to do.

: A few people seem to have similar problems to this but no one has been able to give a definite answer. Any help would be great.

: Thanks

I have a Yamaha S03 connected via gameport on SBLive running either Win98SE or WinXP and I have no trouble sending or receiving midi to/from my PC. I have the latest drivers from soundblaster.com and all XP updates as far as I know. Similar configuration, Athlon 1.33ghz, 512Mb mem, 60Gb ATA133, SBLive!, burner, GeForce 2 MX200 64Mb video, Via chipset via Gigabyte motherboard with 2nd latest BIOS on motherboard. I haven't had any issues under XP. It actually runs better sound-wise in XP than Win98SE (getting delays/static/pops occasionally there...). Running XG Works from Yamaha for sequencing, or Sonar 2.0, Cubase/VST32 5.1 or higher, Acid 3.0G, Sound Forge 6.0, etc...all with no issues in XP. I would suggest you look at the manual for the synth and check all the midi channels are correct. Same goes for your sequencing software on the PC and also under Sounds in Control Panel for MIDI settings.
