MIDI, Cubase and SB Live problems

I've been playing with Cubase VST/32 on Windows for a little while, and can't seem to persuade it to output any MIDI thru' my SB Live 5.1's internal synths (A and B) - or even a software synth - am I missing something?

I can get audio through it fine, but no MIDI events get played back...

This is driving me insane, and VST doesn't even seem to recognise that there is any output port except "SB Live Midi Out [1000]"... I've been tweaking and googleing for hours to try and get this resolved - any ideas?
