Reading MIDI transfer through the serial port?

My keyboard is connected through a Midiman Portman PC/S to the serial (com) port on my computer. I want to be able to 'see' the data transfer through the port. Does anyone know if this is possible using Hyperterminal or Labview? Does anyone know how the Portman works- is it using the MIDI protocol (at 31250) to communicate through the serial port? I'm new to this stuff so any info would be helpful.
