I contacted Tom, and he had just found a fix for the problem. He and I both have K7S5A motherboards -- but the solution isn't to be found on EliteGroup's website. Nope ... it's on Spacewalker's site!

This sounds perverse, but it DOES work: Download the audio drivers from Spacewalker, unzip them, and go through the usual conniptions in Device Manager to change the driver to the one you just downloaded. This will change the device from "SiS PCI Audio Accelerator" to "Avance AC'97 Audio for SiS Audio Controller" and "Avance SB Emulation" -- the latter is the MIDI driver, or at least software emulation of it.

I can't argue with success.
