Mixdown Audio Question

I have Cakewalk ProAudio 9 and when I try to record to one track for audio mixdowns, nothing is played back to me when I can clearly see that something has recorded. I can't figure this out. I followed the book in detail, but no luck. Any advice? Thanks.
