MIDI troubles...

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, and I usually like to lurk a little bit before posting, but as I have a bit of a problem I'm going to jump right in.
First, a little backstory:
My computer: PII 350 running Win98, basic SoundBlaster-type soundcard (Maxi sound MUSE). MIDI in/out connected to joystick port.
My keyboard: Alesis QS7.1
My sequencing software: Voyetra's MIDI Orchestrator Plus (I know, I know, it ain't Cakewalk but I could afford it, I've been using it for three years now, and for my current purposes it's perfectly serviceable).
Background: I use MIDI sequences to practice on my own material for our band and for my own entertainment. If I can't find good ones on the 'net, I sometimes write my own or polish existing ones. Up to this point I've been using exclusively the mouse to enter notes. Never had any problems with playback.
When I connected the QS to my computer via the MIDI cables, I found that MIDI Orchestrator Plus would not recognize more than about half a measure of anything played on the keyboard. So, I nosed around and in Control Panel/Multimedia under the MIDI tab I found the "Add New Instrument" button. So, I added an "External MIDI Instrument".
OK, so now I can record a keyboard track in MIDI Orchestrator Plus. However, when I click the playback button the only sound output comes from the QS7, and can only hear the channel I recorded to.
Also, and more importantly for me, I get no sound from the computer speakers when playing a MIDI file, either with MIDI Orchestrator Plus OR with Media Player.
I have no doubt the fix for this is going to be absurdly simple, but it's eluded me for a week now.
Can anyone help???
Thanks,
Mike
