Thanks for your entertaining rant, which I enjoyed. But I do think you've slightly misunderstood the AudioHQ message (one can certainly criticise Creative for being a bit illiterate when it comes to writing intuitive apps).

"Not mappable" means that controller 91 is hard-mapped to reverb; whereas controller 93 can be remapped to any other effect (chorus is just the default). You need to set up an audio environment (AudioHQ - Environmental Audio) with plenty of global reverb, such as Concert Hall or some such. You should then find that Controller 91 responds properly within those global parameters (i.e. even if you have reverb set to max in the ewnvironmental settings, a value of 0 with CC91 will still produce a dry sound, unless you're using a soundfont where the author has hard-coded some reverb in at the preset level).

I say "should" because for a bit I had trouble getting CC91 to respond, but it works for me with the current drivers.
