weird noise whn recording

i am recording at a really basic level with a microphne strait into my computer, into sonar, but every tme i arm the audio track for recording it makes a noise, at about 2 beats per secod starting at silence, then a crescendo for 5 seconds up to a very loud pulsating noise which sounds like the static on an old tv, what the heck is goin on????
