Getting MIDI from a digital 8 track into Cakewalk

Hi!

I am new to MIDI and Cakewalk. I have a Fostex D-90 8-track digital recorder with a MIDI in/out/thru. My music is already recorded on the D-90, and I would like to use Cakewalk to do the final mix and burn CD's from my music. I am trying to set up the D-90 to output a MIDI signal to the built-in MPU-401 device on my Pentium 4 PC.

I have an onboard CMedia CMI8738/C3DX sound chip. I realize I probably need a better sound device, but for now I'd like to see if I can make this work. I am putting the 15 pin end of the MIDI cable into the game/MIDI port on my PC.

I have setup MIDI tracks on Cakewalk which show 16 MIDI Channels, and also MIDI Omni, as their choice for "In". (I would want to use the first 8 individual channels, which I assume should be the same as the tracks on my Fostex). Currently, I can't even check to see whether Cakewalk is receiving a MIDI signal. The Cakewalk help says to look for the MIDI Input Monitor icon, but I can't find it! I'm sure I have plenty of other problems as well, but finding the MIDI Input Monitor would be a start.

Apologies for the long post, and thanks for any help!

Joe
