Dear Trevor

Your problem is common to ALL large PC's from pentiums up to my AMD 600MHz. The technical reason is that the sound in more advanced soundcards is stored as a "software sample" (there is probably a more correct term). Processing this takes longer than on your old 486 whose soundcard I guess is based on the old Yamaha OPL3, which had it's sounds hardcoded onto the chip for fast processing (and low quality). Playback of MIDI is not affected by the delay (it just starts ½ sec. later than it "should"), but when using your computer as a synth. in connection with a MIDI keyboard a ½ sec. delay between each note will be expirienced.
There is no remedy for this problem!

Sincerely
Bo
