Announcement - MP3 files are here! In order to reach a wider audience for classical music, we now accept MP3 file submissions. Please only send MP3 files you created from MIDI sequences. You may use your own or any public domain MIDI files to start, then make them sound good and record the results in an MP3 file. When you're done, please upload both the MP3 and the MIDI versions. We can only accept copyright free MP3 files, that's why we need the MIDI version, so we can verify the origin of the MP3. The main purpose of the Classical MIDI Connection is still classical MIDI, but we also know that not everyone has the proper MIDI equipment. Not to mention the limitations of General MIDI and the wide range of new software and hardware synths and samplers capable of much better reproduction of classical music. So let's get busy, convert as many MIDI sequences as possible. About the Scarlatti Sonatas: I didn't change the files, the author did. Unfortunately the new versions require some editing, so in most cases they will not sound very good using simple midi player plug-ins, you need a sequencer program to make the changes. The files were saved in midi format 0, without the proper instrument assignment. There are 12 channels, each one should be set to Harpsichord. The reason for the multiple channels is that the creator of these sequences wanted to reproduce the original tuning of the baroque harpsichord. I assume that his synth was already set to harpsichord so he didn't notice the problem, and didn't include the patch changes for all channels. Since patch changes are not sent out in the beginning of the files, you will listen to whatever patches your synth was assigned previously. If you're going to listen to a number of these Scarlatti Sonatas, the best you can do is to set all channels to Harpsichord on your synth or sound module. I simply don't have the time to edit all 500 plus files, but I'm going to upload one midi file with the proper channel assignment. If you play that file first, the Scarlatti Sonatas will sound the way they were intended to, Harpsichord on all channels. John Sankey created a monumental collection of excellent harpsichord sequences and a minor technical detail should not get in the way of enjoying them. Here is my (recently revamped for the contest) parameter list for the 'Customized' preset. Keith Lockhart, former conductor of the Bosten Pops Orchestra, now THE music director of the Utah Symphony orchestra, said, as i bear witness i heard with my own two ears, that the sixth movement of Mahler's 3rd is "one of THE MOST beautiful pieces of music that we as musicians get to play". i listen to Maurice Abravanel's recording of the sixth of the third over and over again and it is phenominal i tell you! if anyway needs a recording to help in preserving the character quality feeling and flow of this stunning piece, we may be able to work something out. The situation you describe in which you can play but not download files is actually normal for this site. I presume it's a measure to prevent wholesale (automated?) downloading and keep bandwidth usage reasonable. However, you probably *can* save a local copy of a file once it's playing in your media player. With Internet Explorer, downloaded files are stored in a temporary folder: search for x*.mid (the file name will begin with the letter x, then a number in square brackets, e.g. x[1].mid), then copy it to a permanent folder and rename it. Your mileage may vary with other browsers. My professor played it once in a music class I took and I loved it!!!! He could not remember the exact number of the piece but he said it was by Chopin and he thought it was called "Pathetique". I listened to a Pathetique by Tchaikovsky but it is not the one I am looking for. If anyone has heard the song in the movie or can watch the movie and recognize the piece, please let me know.
