Announcement - MP3 files are here! In order to reach a wider audience for classical music, we now accept MP3 file submissions. Please only send MP3 files you created from MIDI sequences. You may use your own or any public domain MIDI files to start, then make them sound good and record the results in an MP3 file. When you're done, please upload both the MP3 and the MIDI versions. We can only accept copyright free MP3 files, that's why we need the MIDI version, so we can verify the origin of the MP3. The main purpose of the Classical MIDI Connection is still classical MIDI, but we also know that not everyone has the proper MIDI equipment. Not to mention the limitations of General MIDI and the wide range of new software and hardware synths and samplers capable of much better reproduction of classical music. So let's get busy, convert as many MIDI sequences as possible. About the Scarlatti Sonatas: I didn't change the files, the author did. Unfortunately the new versions require some editing, so in most cases they will not sound very good using simple midi player plug-ins, you need a sequencer program to make the changes. The files were saved in midi format 0, without the proper instrument assignment. There are 12 channels, each one should be set to Harpsichord. The reason for the multiple channels is that the creator of these sequences wanted to reproduce the original tuning of the baroque harpsichord. I assume that his synth was already set to harpsichord so he didn't notice the problem, and didn't include the patch changes for all channels. Since patch changes are not sent out in the beginning of the files, you will listen to whatever patches your synth was assigned previously. If you're going to listen to a number of these Scarlatti Sonatas, the best you can do is to set all channels to Harpsichord on your synth or sound module. I simply don't have the time to edit all 500 plus files, but I'm going to upload one midi file with the proper channel assignment. If you play that file first, the Scarlatti Sonatas will sound the way they were intended to, Harpsichord on all channels. John Sankey created a monumental collection of excellent harpsichord sequences and a minor technical detail should not get in the way of enjoying them. Les USA - Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 20:39:15 (EDT) I have listened to your Scarlatti harpsichord MIDI collection for years. Lately I have noticed the harpsichord has been replaced by a piano or an annoying cheap organ. You have taken away my listening pleasure. Why has this happened? In your files where you can choose an instrument you want to hear, you DO NOT EVEN MENTION the harpsichord! WHY NOT? David Lofgren USA - Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 13:18:32 (EDT) For those who have an Avance AC'97 soundcard and want to use the onboard reverb for MIDI files or to record WAV or MP3 files, as you probably know, the factory presets don't fit classical music very well. Here is my (recently revamped for the contest) parameter list for the 'Customized' preset. It works quite well with all classical MIDIs I've tried. 11.74 m 0.810 -1007 mB -116 0.000 -6.977 mB/m -1174 mB 0.012 s -232 mB 0.017 s 2.414 s 1.440 If it won't let you enter the exact same value as I have listed, get as close as you can. Then, of course, tweak to your heart's content. Steven Glenn USA - Thursday, May 03, 2007 at 16:35:35 (EDT) has any one a midi file of Ravel's la Valse, orchestral version? I'm just finishing a GEEORGEOUS rendition of the 1st movement of Dvorak's "New World" Symphony. I'm actually starting to take it seriously! Maybe I need professional help. I'm considering marriage. Anyway, I actually played horn in the Waco Symphony Orchestra with a wonderful cellist by the name of Kevin Dvorak, Antonin's great-great-great grandson. Guess I'll upload the arrangement, so you'll see it in a few months. Downloading one at a time is a possibility, but not trying to be a pig - if it were possible to download a zip file of each composer would be such an advantage - I am just afraid that all of this may disappear and it is so valuable. I am not a professional, but I download what I can and transpose playable ones using Melody Assistant and edit, transpose, change instruments, change staffs, raise certain music notation octaves when needed - you name it. I am just astounded that this exists on the internet, and I cruise the internet daily. Keith Lockhart, former conductor of the Bosten Pops Orchestra, now THE music director of the Utah Symphony orchestra, said, as i bear witness i heard with my own two ears, that the sixth movement of Mahler's 3rd is "one of THE MOST beautiful pieces of music that we as musicians get to play". i listen to Maurice Abravanel's recording of the sixth of the third over and over again and it is phenominal i tell you! if anyway needs a recording to help in preserving the character quality feeling and flow of this stunning piece, we may be able to work something out. BTW i'm probably going to forget completely that i posted this comment here, and most likely will forget to check for replies, so if anyone wants my help as a resource during the sequencing, granted you find this project to be worthy of your time and effort, as i feel it would be, you know where to get ahold of me. thanks again for all the fine music! The situation you describe in which you can play but not download files is actually normal for this site. I presume it's a measure to prevent wholesale (automated?) downloading and keep bandwidth usage reasonable. However, you probably *can* save a local copy of a file once it's playing in your media player. With Internet Explorer, downloaded files are stored in a temporary folder: search for x*.mid (the file name will begin with the letter x, then a number in square brackets, e.g. x[1].mid), then copy it to a permanent folder and rename it. Your mileage may vary with other browsers. Someone told me to do the following. Open my Windows Media Player 7 and hit Tools-Options-Formats-in Available Formats clear the box marked MIDI files-Apply-Close. Now the songs play, but they still cannot be saved as MIDI files. They can only be saved as HTML files or All Types, and my Noteworthy Composer program does not find them once they are saved. I am convinced that despite its name, this is not a MIDI site. leeneia http:// USA - Saturday, August 24, 2002 at 09:23:29 (EDT) Hey! the Windows Media Player is back!! It's working!!! You can copy the file to a different folder and then rename it. This may seem laborious but it stops wholesale downloading by robots. Paul Hembree Oregon USA - Tuesday, July 03, 2001 at 18:05:56 (EDT) An excellent site. If you are new to classical music, as I am, I recommend reading CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR DUMMIES. When you finish, read Appendix A in the rear which includes several songs to help you get started. The best thing is that you can actually listen to these songs here at MIDIWorld.com! Les Winters http://midiworld.com USA - Thursday, January 04, 2001 at 02:48:05 (EST) Hi, this is a wonderful site!! I have been listening to Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart, and I just LOVE it! However, I have one favourite song by Mozart that I can't find in the list. I believe it is called Alla Turca in ? Major. This is my absolute favourite along with Eine Kleine NachtMusik, and I would like to find it so I can buy a CD. I play classical guitar, and I even have some Bach and Mozart in my guitar music. I have lost 60% of my hearing however, so music is even more precious to me now. I can completely sympathize with Beethoven on hearing loss and near deafness! Anyways, if anyone knows the complete name of the Mozart song Alla Turca (?), I would really appreciate an answer. Thank you very much, and thanks for allowing me to rediscover classical music again. Respectfully Yours, Jennifer Filby :) P.S. I also couldn't find Moonlight Sonata on the Beethoven site. I admit I don't know the proper terms and names, I am a heathen, ha, ha. Susan (susan_walker@mindspring.com) New Orleans, USA - Wednesday, August 04, 1999 at 00:40:11 (EDT) the composer index lists william bolcom, but the linked page that should have bolcom and his works on there is, sadly, missing his name. all the other modern composers are there, but bolcom isn't:( i would really like an MIDI of "the serpent's kiss", written for solo piano, by bolcom, so i was somewhat distraught to find he wasn't on the page after all. colleen none (harpy4508@aol.com) st. louis, mo USA - Wednesday, July 21, 1999 at 18:09:28 (EDT) I tried to get the link for the Brightman/ Bocelli, "A time to say goodbye" and it would not play.
